A table lamp is the perfect choice when you are thinking about adding a decorative element to your room as well as ensuring that you have all the light you need. The diameter of the lampshade should never extend beyond the edge of the table; this will make the whole set up look very unbalanced. You'll also find that the base should be weighted at least a little, especially if you have young children; a weighted lamp is much more stable and less prone to fall over if nudged.

Think about what you want the lamp for. If you are looking for a lamp that will provide you with light for the whole room (often known as ambient lighting) you'll find that there are a number of different options that suit you. Because this lamp will tend to be fairly large, make sure that you pick something in a theme or tone that will complement the rest of the room, or that you will find easy to design the look of a room around.

If you have decided to simply use the lamp as a reading lap for someone sitting on a couch or an arm chair, there are a few other things to remember. Keep in mind the fact that the bottom of the lampshade should be level with the ear of a person sitting in the chair; this will prevent the glare from hitting their eyes. This is an important measurement to take, so get your measuring tape and make sure you take the results to the store with you! For ease in reading, especially if the ambient light is dimmer, make sure that the bulbs you take combine to at least a hundred watts. If you find that your socket can only handle a 60 watt bulb, you may want a light fixture that will allow for a three bulb set up.

Make sure that when you buy a table lamp that you at least match the tone of the room, whether it is modern or more classic. By taking the time to figure out what you are looking for when it comes to table lamps, you are making an important decision about your decor!
